Cadmium is commonly found as a protective plating, particularly on
springs and screws. Corrosion resistance is no longer its primary
function - flexibility, lubricity and solderability (for certain applications)
are among the properties most valued. An alternative coating would be
preferred because of the adverse environmental impact of cadmium, but
no other plating system appears to confer the same range of benefits.
Probably the most familiar cadmium plated objects are the large external
springs on the classic 'Anglepoise' lamps.
