There is some discussion on how one should round numbers ending in .5. Some people recommend that numbers whose integer part is even should be rounded down, and odd ones rounded up. Thus 4.5 would round to 4, and 5.5 to 6. However both SPSS and Excel seem to take no account of this, and round up 4.5 to 5 and 5.5 to 6. I seem to remember being taught the former convention, and it has even been suggested that there is a British Standard to this effect. Obviously it's going to more convenient to take what programs supply. Is anyone aware whether there is any recent official guidance?
