RISK RESEARCH SCIENTISTS/ MATHEMATICAL MODELLERS

Applications are invited for two permanent posts in our Risk Research Department at the Veterinary Laboratories Agency, near Addlestone, Surrey. This post involves the design and running of risk analysis projects involving risk assessment modelling in the fields of national and international veterinary and public health.

The successful candidates will as part of a team, develop and use models for application to current national and international problems in the veterinary and public health fields and will manage the development and maintenance of the associated PC-based databases to handle the collected data. Initiating and maintaining contact with all those that provide data and advice including colleagues internally within the VLA and external Government Officials is a vital role, as well as particularly liaising with mathematicians and statisticians involved in the field of risk analysis. The successful applicants will be expected to contribute to project reports and scientific papers, to evaluate the mathematical content of risk analysis project proposals and will be involved in the regular reviewing and evaluation of methodological developments in the field of risk analysis, particularly as applied to veterinary and public health.

Candidates should have a degree in a quantitative subject. A general appreciation of biological and agricultural systems and an understanding of farm livestock methods most probably gained whilst undertaking a post-graduate degree. Experience of Bayesian modelling particularly for one of the posts is an advantage and the ability to maintain good communication skills with all participants within the studies will be required.

These posts are in Pay Band E L13,000 to L23,300 pa according to qualifications and experience. Progression within this pay band is dependent on performance.
