Centre for Applied Social Surveys

Short Course: Design & Administration of Postal & Self-completion
Surveys, 11-12 November 1999
Venue: The Grosvenor Hotel, Grosvenor Road, Newcastle.

Presented by Roger Thomas and Elaine McColl
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Course objectives:
1) to enable participants to develop a thorough and practical
understanding of the principles of good questionnaire design as
applied to self-administered quantitative surveys (including the
special issues related to the design of factual, non-factual and
sensitive questions);

2) to establish understanding and competence in how to plan,
administer and maximise quality and response in postal and other
self-completion surveys.

Course content will include:
principles of questionnaire design, questionnaires to measure
behaviour, attitudes and values, pretesting and piloting postal
surveys, project management and administration, and minimising
non-response.

The course will include workshop sessions so that participants can
work through practical exercises. Teaching staff will be present in
between sessions and on the evening of day 1 in order to discuss
questionnaire issues arising from individual participants' research.
Numbers are limited to facilitate such participant support.

Target Audience
The course is aimed at researchers who need to design and
administer self-completion surveys, especially those in the social,
economic, educational and medical sciences. If you are unsure
whether this course is appropriate for you please contact Nyovani
Madise (E-mail [log in to unmask] or

Participants will receive written notes, copies of overhead
transparencies and a reading list.
