In this workshop we aim to explore how these communities construct the technologies of their work place. CSCW has made evident the social and situated nature of work. But it is only recently that researchers have begun to take seriously the different communities involved in the design and use of artefacts. Star, Lave and others have developed the concepts of community of practice and artefacts as boundary objects. The work of Latour and Bijker has addressed the phenomenon of interpretive flexibility and shown how technologies are socially constructed. Within the systems engineering community the idea of stakeholder analysis and viewpoints has been developed. In the workshop we hope to bring together perspectives on studying the relations between communities and the technologies they use and design. Submissions We invite the submission of full papers but three to four page abstracts will also be acceptable. Relevant topics include but are not limited to: * theories and models of collaboration and co-operative work * communities of practice, artefacts and information sharing * co-evolution of technology and work practice * cultural and cross-cultural issues in technology use * co-operative design and participatory design and socio-technical systems thinking * stakeholder and viewpoint analysis * artefacts crossing cultural boundaries (designers, users, management, etc.) Decisions about acceptance will be made by the review committee on the basis of the papers submitted. It is hoped that publication of the full papers will be arranged after the workshop. Deadlines Receipt of submissions 18 December 1998 Committee decision 29 January 1999 Send submissions by electronic mail to [log in to unmask] (preferably in Word RTF or postscript form) or by post to the address below. Workshop organisation This workshop is part of a series of one day workshops organised by Peter Wright and Bob Fields of the York HCI group. A previous successful workshop was held in September 1998 (http://www.cs.york.ac.uk/~bob/kingsmanor1.html) and has lead to a special issue of the International Journal of Human Computer Studies. The special issue call for papers is still current and can be found at http://www.cs.york.ac.uk/~bob/specialissue.html Bob Fields & Peter Wright Department of Computer Science The University of York York, YO10 5DD, UK.
