Mick & others who might be interested--

see below for a list i prepared some time ago. there are 2 reviews you
might like to look at that mention some of these programs plus others,
including EasyMA, RevMan, and Stata. the references for the 2 reviews
are:

Matthias Egger, Jonathan AC Sterne, George Davey Smith . Meta-Analysis
Software. BMJ No 7126 Volume 316 [Education and debate section],
Saturday 17 January 1998

Sharon-Lise T. Normand. Meta-analysis software: a comparative review.
American Statistican, 1995, 49(3), 298-309.

there is also CDC sharewhare for meta-analysis, available from their web
homepage. i believe that it's called MetaEpi. hope this helps. cheers,
fred

Meta-analysis software--somewhat dated list i prepared several years
ago, but descriptions are still pretty accurate (i think):

Lau J. Meta-analyst v0.9. both random & fixed effects for pooled: odds
ratios (Mantel-Haenszel & Peto-modified M-H), relative risk ratios, risk
differences. can also get NNT, homogeniety stats, & do 'cumulative'
meta-anlaysis). DOS program; works with Windows, however, printing can
be
tricky but prints very nice postscript figures.

Eddy DM, Hasselblad V, Schacter R. Meta-analysis by the Confidence
Profile
Method. San Diego: Academic Press, 1992. (text plus FAST-PRO software
for
Bayesian meta-analysis routines) note: this is Bayesian approach, but
if the
priors are set=zero, then essentially should have a conventional
analysis.
It handles both fixed & random effects for binary data. It also can
handle
continuous data, but i am uncertain if it can do random effects for this
or
not.

Johnson BT. DSTAT: Software for the Meta-analytic Review of Research
Literatures. Hillsdale, NJ: Erlbaum, 1989. [software & manual for
meta-analysis routines for continuous data] To the best i can tell,
this
just calculates fixed effects.

Mullen B. Advanced BASIC Meta-analysis. Hillsdale, NJ: Erlbaum, 1989.
[meta-analysis routines for continuous data] To the best i
can tell, this just calculates fixed effects. NOTE: there is a floppy
disk that comes with the book.

Schwarzer R. Meta-analysis programs. Behavior, Research Methods, &
Computers. 1988; 20(3):338. [description of meta-analysis routines for
continuous data--can send for shareware]

True Epistat. Epistat Services. 20111 Cap Rock Circle. Richardson, TX
75080-3417. [has meta-analysis routines for binary and continuous data.
handles both fixed & random effects.]
