We have to make a distinction : Latry is for God, Duly for the
saints. Mary has a special type of devotion, hyperduly: above the saints, of
course, but, anyhow, under God (just under). And that's the question. Can we
pray Mary ? and in the Middle Ages ? C.G. Durand, in "l'Imaginaire de la
Renaissance", has put into relief the anthropological concept of
"Dieu-la-fille", "God-the-Daughter". Mary is altogether mother and daughter,
and wife (remember te Canticus canticorum), so close to God that the prayer
is not impossible, but "shared"...
Of course, in strict terms of theology, we've not to pray Mary. But
the religious Gautier de Coinci writes (5 times) :
        Bele douce dame
Mere Dieu, aiez merci
        Merci, merci, merci
        De ma chaitive ame
        (Ich 7, ed Koenig t. 1, TLF, Droz 1966, p. 40)
