A theological technicality. Medieval Catholics "prayed" to saints the way
most people "pray" to God: to ask for something. Those of us who were
formed in Catholicism through the 1960s "prayed" to saints, sometimes more
often (and more "successfully") than to God (e.g. "Dear Saint Anthony
please come 'round; something's lost and can't be found").
