I would guess that your French professor was over-interpreting what Dante says in the DVE, about the use of French for what we now call 'Romance' narrative. There are a few remarks quotable from other writers altogether which say similar things to what your interlocutor was saying -Brunetto Latini, introducing his Tresor; and Martin Canal, introducing a history of Venice.
