In his articleon black dogs in folklore published in the 1994 edition of
"The Edge" Bob Trubshaw, citing his reference as Val Shepherd's "Historic
Wells in & around Bradford" (Heart of Albion Press 1994), says the
following:
"A spectral hound with large glowing red eyes traditionally haunts
Helliwell Banks Well, Baildon (104:16103962; now capped over) & the nearby
Slaughter Lane. Several other wells in West Yorkshire are associated with
the "Guytrash" which takes the form of a large shaggy dog with broad
webbed feet. It has drooping "saucer" eyes and walks with a splashing
sound (the "trash" sound of old fashioned boots)."

Does anybody have any further details of this legend, particularly
locations for the "other" wells or reports of black dog legends associated
with wells in England/Scotland/Wales/Ireland - if so I would be really
grateful for anything available, maybe reply off list if the stories are
too lengthy for the list.

Cheers,

AEM
