What a useful forum this is!   Since writing to John on this question myself earlier this morning, I've read some of the other contributions and picked up some useful tips that I think I'll use in the future.  Thanks for bringing this up John.

Some colleagues of mine used a good method to get round this problem. 
If you can spare the people, have one of you to run the focus group, and
another who sits outside the group with a notepad.  Once everyone is
seated, give them each a number (on paper, that is!).  Each time someone
starts to speak, jot down their number and the first couple of words
they say.  Apparently this is very easy to do and makes transcription
extremely easy - particularly if those transcribing were not present at
the focus group.
