Dear Simon, I have been sent the following by TCG Editions: Franco Troinao, `Jerome: A Story in seven languages in memory of St Jerome, patron saint of translators', Brussels, TCG Editions, 1998. The author, Franco Troiano, b. 1944, published the story originally in his collection `Traduttori: tre racconti' (Milan, TCG Editions, 1994 (and 1996)). The blurb talks of `the Patron Saint of translation, that veritable modern, cosmopolitan intellectual of 1,500 years ago'. The Eurologos Group (dedicated to faithful translation, and founded in 1977) are behind this venture. Late emergence of novel in Italy: well, there were loads of 17C ones, often mythological and/or historical, as also in France. But the narrative tradition of Italy was tied up closely with poetic forms: esp. the Epic/Romance. Also tradition (literary and linguistic) was much tighter and formative in Italy than in English.
