The "Resource Type and Format" working group has produced two short papers summarizing recommendations for the use of DC.Type and DC.Format elements. The texts are included in accompanying messages, and they can also be viewed at http://www.agcrc.csiro.au/projects/3018CO/metadata/dc_tf/ The recommendations are essentially prefigured by and compatible with both the draft RFC#1 and the DC User Guides. These working group recommendations are now available for discussion by on the DC list, and when appropriate may be ratified/blessed as official DC recommendations. The Resource Type position paper took the Dublin Core Resource Types, Minimalist Draft (July 17, 1997, updated September 23, 1997) http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/Metadata/types.html as a starting point and reflects the discussions at DC 5 in Helsinki, October 3-5, 1997, as well as subsequent discussions on the electronic list of the Type/Format Working Group. However, it will be noted that the ony substantive change in the recommendations are the addition of an additional Resource Type "Physical Object" to the enumerated list. The recommended usage of the different types has also been refined slightly. The Format position paper largely deals with the use of externally defined controlled vocabularies for element content, and also makes recommendations regarding the inclusion of "size" information in the value of the DC.Format element. These papers only deals with unqualified Dublin Core elements Type and Format; further work will continue on qualified DC. -- __________________________________________________ Dr Simon Cox - Australian Geodynamics Cooperative Research Centre CSIRO Exploration & Mining, PO Box 437, Nedlands, WA 6009 Australia T: +61 8 9389 8421 F: +61 8 9389 1906 [log in to unmask] http://www.ned.dem.csiro.au/SimonCox/
