I heard on the radio that Sheffield aims to be a bilingual city by the year 2004 - drawing upon European funds from their objective 2 status. In the light of PT's comments on monolingualism and unemployment, perhaps we (CGF) can apply for European Social Funds to improve the rather sluggish performance of geographers in the labour market, especially in areas of industrial decline? If such a wonderful opportunity was to arise, I wouldn't mind learning a bit of Romanian. ---------------------------------------------------------- Dr Paul Chatterton Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS) University of Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7RU, UK Tel: +44 (0)191 222 8697 Fax: +44 (0)191 232 9259 e-mail: [log in to unmask] %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
