You might try: Jean Devisse & Michel Molliat, _The Image of the Black in Western Art_, II, pts. 1 and 2, published in Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, in the 1980's: sorry I don't have the full date. vol.1 isby Jean Vercoutter, Jean Leclant, et al., and runs from the Pharaohs to the Fall of the Roman Empire. II, pts 1 and 2, runs to the 16th century. There has also been, I believe, an article in _Gesta_ or _Art Bulletin_ within the last decade.
