Hello
I have been asked to post this on the list. Some of you may find it of
interest.

I also want to take the opportunity to let you all know that some of the
settings on intarch-interest have now been changed, in the hope of
stimulating dialogue. Any replies that you now make to postings will go to
the _list_ for everyone to read, ruminate and respond, and not just to the
individual sender as was originally the case.

Subject: Electronic Publishing and the National Grid for Learning

The British Computer Society Electronic and Multimedia Publishing
Specialist Group is holding the following meeting (apologies for any
cross-posting).

Just-in-Time Education:
Electronic Publishing and the National Grid for Learning
Thursday 11 June 1998 9.30 a.m. for 10.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m
Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies Russell Square,
London WC1

The Government's Consultation Paper on Connecting the Learning Society:
National Grid for Learning states that the Grid 'will be a way of
finding
and using on-line learning and teaching materials'. It goes on to say
that
the Grid will provide 'high quality software and content . . . ensure
that
nothing is provided at public expense, which could otherwise be provided

commercially of good quality and reasonable cost'.

Inevitably, a starting point for the Grid will be re-purposing many of
the
existing curriculum materials, but, as noted in the BCS report "2000 and

Beyond: A School Odyssey" , there are great opportunities for developing

text and multimedia specialist resources for educators and learners.
This
meeting explores some of experiences of commercial publishers who have
published multimedia materials for the diverse needs of the learning
community. It also addresses some of the issues and challenges that
publishing for the Grid raises from viewpoints of both the publishher
and
user communities.
