Public Displays of Asianness
A Conference on Asian American Popular Culture
New York University November 13-14, 1998
hosted by the Asian/Pacific/American Studies Program & Institute

		c.a.l.l. f.o.r. i.d.e.a.s.

Public Displays of Asianness, is a conference that puts at center stage
Asian Pacific American popular culture as it circulates, critiques, and
informs everyday life within disparate communities. ::: PDA seeks to
address both Asian American Studies, which has not fully considered
the role of popular culture in the formation of Asian Pacific American
communities as a serious topic of investigation, and studies of Popular
Culture, which have not been attentive to cultures of the Asian and
Pacific Islander diaspora. ::: We seek works and ideas, both in the form of
cultural performances and cultural critique, which engage these issues
thoughtfully and creatively.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

	:: Film&Video: Kung Fu, Anime, Bollywood, Independent Film/Video ::

:: Asian American Body Culture: Fashion, Beauty and Body Politics ::

:: Music and Sound: DJs, Sampling, Electronic music, HipHop ::

:: Performance: Spoken word, Multimedia Dance and Theater ::

:: Underground Publications: Zines, Comics, Mags ::

:: Technophiles and Race: Technotoys, Internet, Mobile Technologies ::

:: Public Spaces and Cultures of Conglomeration:
clubs, pool, surf, skate cultures ::
