I thought Christ was associated with red in terms of his sacrificial blood. The colour red has two rather different liturgical connotations. One is, as you say, blood; so that red vestments are used, for example, on Good Friday and on feasts of martyrs who shed their blood for Christ. The other is fire; so that red vestments (sometimes a different shade of red) are used on the feast of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles like tongues of fire; also on feasts of apostles, whether or not they were martyrs. The usage is not strictly confined to those apostles who were present at Pentecost, but is followed with respect also to Evangelists - Mark and Luke were not among the original twelve, but still merit red vestments.
