I have heard Astralabe's name explained as expressing Peter's interest in things Arabic, the astrolabe being of Arabic origin; according to this theory, Peter was beginning to take an interest in the knowledge, philosophy, and science coming into Europe via Muslim Spain, and naming his son after a navigational computer, however unusual that may be, demonstrated his attraction to this new source of knowledge.
