But the main reason for my posting is the humble request to shed some light on my
ignorance: Could you please spend another few words on the history of Otto III opening
Charlemagne's tomb since I'm not familiar with the story? (Or indicate me a book
where I can find it?)

Thank you very much!

Otto III meets Charles the Great:
You will find the story in Ademar of Chabannes, Chronicon, ed. J. Chavanon
Paris 1897 and also (completely different slant) in Annales Hildesheimenses,
s.a. 1000 (MGH SSrG VIII).
There is a really good forthcoming paper on the event by Knut G"orich, 'Otto
III. oeffnet das Karlsgrab in Aachen', in _Herrschaftsrepr"asentation im
ottonischen Sachsen_ ed. ? G.Althoff and ? someone else which will be a volume
in the Vortr"age und Forschungen series.
You will also find comment and references in Althoff's recent book on Otto III
(Otto III., Primus Verlag: Darmstadt, 1997. It would also be worth looking at
G"orich's _Otto III. Romanus Saxonicus et Italicus_ (Sigmaringen 1993)
