POSITION NO.A37/98

The Department of Geography and Environmental Science at The University
of
Newcastle, NSW, is one of Australia's largest undergraduate teaching
centres
in geography and environmental science, with an established reputation
for
high quality research involving young innovative academics.  In recent
years
its postgraduate student numbers have expanded rapidly.  Nine new
scholarship-funded PhD students have commenced studies in Human
Geography
since 1996.

The Department seeks a Lecturer Level B to teach in social and cultural
geography to commence as soon as possible.  This position arises because
of
the election of Professor Hilary Winchester to be President of Academic
Senate from January 1998 for a two-year period.

The candidate will be expected to teach social and cultural geography in
the
first year of appointment, and in the second year of appointment would
be
expected to undertake course co-ordination and Honours and Postgraduate
supervision.  The successful appointee would be expected to continue
his/her
own research and contribute to the Department's active research
programme. 

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential:

PhD (or near completion) or equivalent demonstrated research experience
in
Human Geography.
Successful university teaching in social and cultural geography.
Demonstrated research and publications record.
Specialist expertise that complements existing expertise in urban and
regional restructuring and its socio-cultural implications.
Ability to work independently and collectively as a team member.

Desirable:

Ability to co-ordinate human geography subjects.
Experience in curriculum development.
Capacity to supervise Honours and Postgraduate students.

Salary within the range:  

Level B - $47,002 per annum to $55,816 per annum
Compulsory contributory superannuation is a condition of employment.
