The Higher Education Estate:
Building a Better Future
28th April  - 30th April, 1999

Background

Estates and Buildings not only represent one of the major heads of a
university’s or college’s expenditure but make a vital contribution to
the overall student learning experience. We have therefore chosen to
continue with the theme ‘Building a Better Future’ for this year’s
course. Concurrent with changes in higher education which have
affected us all, the management of estates and buildings has also been
much affected by new technology and highly developed office systems.

The staff responsible for the provision and administration of
buildings and estates need not only to update their professional
skills, but also to develop their administrative, managerial and
personal skills, particularly in the field of communications and
resource management.

Objectives

· To demonstrate that the management of estates has a key role inassisting universities and colleges to meet their key objectives, ie
  teaching and research and to explore that key role in detail.
· To include training on some important personal and professional management skills for estates staff.
· To demonstrate a commitment by Directors of Estates and AUDE to promoting staff development.
· To provide a professional development opportunity for senior and middle managers in higher education estates departments.

Speakers (to include)

· Bob Hardwick, Assistant Director of UCoSDA, and
· Richard Metcalfe, Director of Estates, University of Durham.

Plus

· Representatives of AUDE
· Directors of Estates
· Funding Council Estates Adviser
· Senior HE Management

Convenor

Bob Hardwick, Assistant Director, UCoSDA.

Content

The programme will be based on key issues for estates staff, which in
recent years have included the following:

an overview of recent changes in higher education;
the HEFCE’s view on estates management;
strategies for higher education estates;
quality assurance/customer care;
matching maintenance to strategies;
the financial dimension;
an institutional approach to estates management;
the environmental dimension;
dealing with priorities and pressures;
the safety dimension;
managing change.

   with management responsibility (in pre-1992 universities probably on
   academic-related scales).

   understanding/overview of key aspects of estate management in HE.
