Separate brochures will be circulated for these courses.

Background

This programme, `An Introduction to Higher Education' has been running
successfully in various forms since 1971. It has been designed for
those who have been recently appointed or promoted to university or
college administrative posts. It is intended to serve as an induction
into key aspects of the higher education system.

By bringing together administrators from a wide variety of
institutions and backgrounds, it enables participants to establish
contacts, share experiences and set their jobs and roles in a wider
context.

The course is presented three times a year in Durham, Bristol and
Birmingham and runs over three days. The curriculum is the same for
each of the three presentations and administrators may choose which of
the courses best fits in with their own work schedule.

Aim

The aim of the course is to increase participants' knowledge and
understanding of the higher education system and of their role within
it.

Target Participants

It is intended for staff recently appointed or promoted to an
administrative post from universities, colleges and other institutions
of HE, ideally within the first 6-12 months of service. Participants
are likely to be in jobs that are substantially administrative rather
than clerical in nature and be on administrative grades 1-3 or APT&C
grade 26 and above.

Programme

The programme will include both presentations and participative
activities as well as opportunities for informal discussions. The
curriculum covers:

· Framework of Higher Education · Quality and Accountability
· Funding and Finance · Administrative Roles and Responsibilities
· Structures and Decision Making . Visions
 · Strategic Management

Fee

The fee for these three day residential programmes will be: £320 members, £640 non-members.
