Dear Colleague, Help CHEST to Help Your Institution CHEST has been approached by Macmillan with a view to CHEST negotiating for the provision of the "Grove Dictionary of Art" online. The following brief description is provided by MacMillan: 'This is a comprehensive art reference work covering all forms of the visual arts: painting, sculpture, architecture, graphic and decorative arts, and photography, from prehistory to the 1990s.' Details of the Dictionary may be found at http://www.macmillan-reference.co.uk/TDA/ CHEST is anxious to receive your views so please let us know the value of the Grove Dictionary of Art as an online resource to your Institution. It would be helpful if you could indicate whether you already have purchased the printed edition and, if so, which groups within your institution have ready access to it. Also, could you let us have your opinion of this work as a resource for teaching and learning. Please do bear in mind that past experience has shown that approaching the supplier as a consortia has yielded resources at a much more affordable price. The greater the number of institutions that pay the first asking price the less opportunity there is for negotiation and thus fewer institutions who can afford to have the resource and thus more staff and students across the community who are deprived. In any negotiation CHEST will be seeking an additional discount in respect of those institutions which have already purchased the print version. CHEST will also seek to ensure that an electronic archive copy is also available to subscribing institutions. An early response to this message would be very helpful. Please send all responses to [log in to unmask] All financial information will be treated in the strictest confidence. Please do not reply to the list. ------------------------------------------------ Heather Franklin Contracts Officer, CHEST Tel: 01225 826870 %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
