1. ISI Renewal - Further updates - 6th November 1998
----------------------------------------------------

Please note the above date in your diary.

Friday 6th November 1998, in the Lecture Theatre of the Scientific
Society, New Burlington Place ( off Savile Row ), London W1X 1AB.
Nearest tubes Oxford Circus & Piccadilly Circus.

This is an important seminar on the renewal of ISI agreement, with an
opportunity to discuss JISC Circular that will have been issued by
then.

Further details will follow as soon as possible.

2. Compendex to be renewed at EDINA
-----------------------------------

The present Compendex Agreement, which started in late 1993, expires
on the 5 December 1998.

Earlier this year JISC asked CHEST to negotiate the renewal of the
Compendex agreement and CHEST has progressed the renegotiation. The
renegotiation is now in its final stages and pricing has already been
released to existing Compendex sites.

In parallel with the negotiations, and in accordance with JISC policy,
all the JISC Datacentres were invited to tender for the running of the
Compendex service. This tender process is designed to achieve the
best service for the community at a reasonable cost.

As a result of the tender process EDINA were chosen to run the renewed
Compendex agreement and will do so from 6 December 1998.

Full details of the new Compendex agreement and transition
arrangements will be issued by CHEST (on [log in to unmask], and
on the CHEST web site www.chest.ac.uk) as they become available.

3. Special Offer for OCLC's Electonic Collections Online
--------------------------------------------------------
This Special Offer for Electronic Collections Online is open to all
CHEST eligible sites.

CHEST and OCLC are pleased to announce a special offer for getting
started with Electronic Collections Online, OCLC's web-based electronic
journals service.

Through this offer you receive:

* Discounted ECO Access Account Fees. Your institution is
guaranteed a discount of at least 28% on its OCLC Access account fees.
This means that you will pay a maximum of #18 per journal for 12 months
of access through the FirstSearch interface. (This represents a
discount of 28% over the standard price of #25 per journal). Depending
on the level of adoption across CHEST this fee may be even lower.

* Your choice of almost 1600 journals. You choose the journal you
wish to access through ECO from the list attached to the order form at
http://www.chest.ac.uk/oclc/eco-order-form.html. These include
approximately 400 titles that you can receive for no additional
subscription fee if you subscribe to the corresponding print version in
1999. (Your only cost is the access fee described above). Another 600
titles are available as stand alone subscriptions - many at a discount
over print. If you already have a subscription to the Academic Press
IDEAL or Project Muse collections, you can also access these journals
through ECO.

* One-stop shopping through CHEST and OCLC. CHEST and OCLC will
provide institutions with one-stop shopping for access and content. One
invoice will cover the cost of any journal subscription you purchase
and the associated access fees.

* Up to an extra 2 months of free access. Libraries will receive
free access to the complete ECO collection between Nov 1st and December
31st, 1998.

All of this is in addition to the standard benefits of subscribing to
Electronic Collections Online including FirstSearch access to your
electronic journal collection, with links to databases such as Medline,
EconLit and Social Science Abstracts, monthly journal usage statistics;
OCLC's archiving solution and more.

How to participate

Select the journals you wish to access from the list and return to:

Andrew Evans
OCLC Europe
7th Floor, Tricorn House
51-53 Hagley Road
Edgbaston
Birmingham
B16 8TP

Your participation fee will be the total of any journal subscriptions
that you choose plus a maximum of #18 per journal for one year of access
through the FirstSearch web interface.

The signing up period for this special offer ends on December 1st 1998.
At the end of this period, CHEST/OCLC will consolidate the figures for
all the eligible sites and calculate any additional discounts.
