There are still a few places available on the following Netskills workshop. Netskills Workshop: The Internet: Your Research Library Using efficient search methods to locate quality information and research resources on the Internet 9:30 - 4:30 Wednesday 27th January 1999 Newcastle University The Internet, encompassing tools such as the World Wide Web, provides the infrastructure for the current information revolution. Information networked worldwide using the Internet offers research and information-seeking possibilities previously unimaginable. The quantity of information available, 24 hours every day, to the desktop provides a huge addition to the traditional research library - sometimes called the "Information Super-Library". The Internet is becoming increasingly important in the modern research environment, particularly with the use of multimedia formats and the production of electronic journals. However, the ease of publication on the Internet can bring problems, such as a reduction in quality and a feeling of information overload. This workshop aims to provide you with the skills you need to use this new wealth of information efficiently and reliably. While many services at first glance easy to use, many users find them frustrating and ineffective. Advanced features often provide the user with efficient techniques and therefore enhanced results. The workshop will also look at current and future developments in the use of information services and searching tools. It is suitable for researchers and academics from any discipline, librarians and computing service staff. Workshop Content: The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion. Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials. Topics covered will include: * Internet versus more traditional information resources * efficient searching methods and strategies * a comparison of search engines * advanced searching techniques * effective use of a Web browser * use of Metadata * information quality and academic issues * electronic journals * future developments By the end of the workshop participants will have: * investigated different types of Web-based information service * examined advanced techniques used in information seeking * used Boolean operators to perform Web searches * developed searching strategies * an awareness of the importance of Metadata * investigated quality issues related to Web-based information such as accuracy and currency Participants will also have an opportunity to discuss issues such as: * intellectual property rights * Internet publishing * information overload * changing patterns in research Workshop Requirements: Participants need no special technical skills and no previous knowledge of the Internet; however basic computer skills such as using a mouse and keyboard are essential, and experience of using Microsoft Windows to open and save files and open and close applications e.g. a word processor, would be helpful. The cost of the workshop is 99 pounds for participants from higher education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the relevant fees. Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
