The current (30 May) issue of the New Scientist has an
article by Glyn Moody entitled "New Dawn" about the
Extensible Markup Language (XML) which is likely to have a
considerable effect on the future of World Wide Web. The
article mentions XML applications in chemical formulae and
mathematical equations and, in a bit more detail, musical
notation. Librarians are mentioned in connection with the
Dublin Core metadata schema which it describes briefly.

In addition to discussing the advantages of XML the article
quotes a warning from Tim Brady, a vice-president at Yahoo,
that the use of XML will make it easier for businesses to
spam search engines to make their web pages rank more
highly in search lists than they ought to.
