I forward a message from the computer ethics list which seems
eminently sensible. I've tried to get mailbase to do automatic list
recording too and failed. I'd suggest adding ir to the subject
field and will try to remember to do it myself :)

> As a lot of people have joined the list recently, we would like to remind
> the members of this list of a couple of list rules.
>
> The complete list of rules are available at
> <http://www.ccsr.cms.dmu.ac.uk/discussion/other.html>, and were sent to
> you when you joined the list (if you want to discuss the appropriateness
> of these list rules, please contact us direct at

> The two particular reminders are:
>
> Section 1.1
>
> "1.1 Put the letters [CE] at the start of the subject line
>
> List members are asked to include the letters [CE] at the start of the
> subject line of all messages to enable others on the list to identify that
> the message has come via this list. Some of us receive vitally important

> Unfortunately the software does not enable [CE] to be added automatically,

> And Section 3.4
>
> "3.4 Don't send attachments to the Computer Ethics list
>
> Some email programs can send non-text files, such as a word-processed
> documents, or computer programs, via email. These are called attachments.
>
> A lot of people will be unable to read them, either because their email
> program can't decode them, or because they don't have the right word
> processing software to read them after they have been decoded. You should
> also be aware that a lot of people receive email on a central computer,
> where storage space is limited, and an attached file can mean they run out
> of space and cannot receive any more email.
>
> Instead of sending attachments, you could do one of the following:
>
> * Send a message to the list offering to post an attached file to anyone
> who wants a copy (sending attachments to an individual is acceptable)
>
> * Put the file on your local web or ftp server and post the URL to the
> list
>
> * If the file is small, copy the text into your email message. Everyone
> can read plain text messages.
>
> * Ask CCSR to store the file by emailing [log in to unmask]
>
> Some email programs can send encoded messages, which are unreadable until
> decoded, and some format your email as an HTML page. Please turn these
> options OFF before sending messages to the Computer-Ethics list from
> mailers such as MS Exchange, MS Mail, MS Outlook Express, Lotus Groupware:
> many or all of these have default settings that are inappropriate for
