as I haven't checked the archives

If you send messages to the list as
plain/text

then there should be no problems
with either list messages or the archives.

some email programs default to sending mail
is HTML
multipart messages
and other settings
that cannot be read correctly by other mail programs
and result in garbage been sent
and the garbage remains in the archives.

Check the options on your email program
for sending mail.
