The name of David Chaloner crops up from time to time as one who has
quietly and unobtrusively produced a body of good work over the years
without, perhaps, the respect it deserves. This is a plug for one of his
collections - from 1989! which seems to me to have sunk without trace:
Peter Hodgkiss tells me he has copies in his garage for them as wants to
know more...

ADDRESS

It is not enough to know the time,
one has to be there.
Hello then.

It was Orion, that star
formation. It was Ursa Minor
and a star cluster.
It was nothing
but the night sky expanding
with a distant hum
above our upturned heads.
The meteor, short and splendid,
scored a diagonal line, returning
to dust.
One of us did not see
and we're no saying who.

There is an answer
but you are looking uneasy,
and I am looking at you,
before we look away.

The stars continue through the night,
and fade in our wake,
as we pass beneath them,
to fade into sleep,
no final question asked,
no answer finally given.
