I was talking with Fred Beake about emotion in Prynne last night. Fred points out that Prynne is emotional, with which I would agree. Where we differ is that I say that Prynne does not convey that emotion in his poetry, other than stating it. Yesterday I read Derek Mahon's `Yellow Book' and there, after a rubbish start, he conveys emotion in his poetry. A welcome return to form after twenty years, even if only intermittent. I have never found JHP doing that to me. I have lost my copy of `weasels' somewhere in my cardboard boxes and will have to wait for the Bloodaxe Collected to reread it. But again poetry is all personal taste and Fred and I disagree very much over Prynne. But I made my position clear last week. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
