Off-Guard

(for Doug Clark, so recently nit-picked)

In any meaningful sense,
poetry enters the world utterly
silent, and by its dumbness
makes itself known;
its rarest qualities
made splendidly common  ---
and noting this difference
as one would observe bluejays
at the windowsill,
a certain aloofness comes
and the eye catches
the poem like a ball
thrown against a wall
not quite there.
