Research Associate Positions and PhD Studentships

A number of research positions are available within the Foresight Centre
for Process Analytics and Control Technology at the University of
Newcastle.  Applicants with a background in Bio-chemical engineering,
Chemical /  Mechanical Engineering, Analytical Chemistry, Physics, Applied
Mathematics or Statistics

1. CPACT - the Foresight Centre has a number of research projects involving
collaborations between end-user chemical companies - BP Chemicals, BNF,
ICI, pharmaceutical companies - Astra Pharmaceuticals, Glaxo Wellcome,
SmithKline Beecham and Zeneca alongside analytical instrument vendors and
advanced process control and optimisation companies.  Two RA positions or
PhD's are available in the areas of analytical chemistry/chemometrics and
multivariate statistical process control.

2. EU ESPRIT Project PERFECT - this project will address the development of
dynamic multivariate statistical process performance monitoring methods and
whole-plant performance monitoring approaches in conjunction with BASF
(Germany), BICC CEAT Cavi (Italy), DSM (Holland) and Unilever (Holland)
together with a leading European company in real-time Process Optimisation,
MDC Technology.  Three Research Associate positions are available at
Newcastle, each for a period of three years.  A further Research Associate
position is available for placement with BASF at Ludvigshaven in Germany.

3. EU ESPRIT Project ASTES - this project will address the development of
an intelligent multivariate statistical process control methodology based
upon the real time expert system G2.  The project will be carried out in
association with British Steel and Computas (Norway).  A Research Associate
position is available for 12 months.

The successful candidates will join an internationally acknowledged
interdisciplinary research team comprising 9 Postdoctoral Research staff
and 8 PhD students working alongside Dr Elaine Martin and Professor Julian
Morris.

Candidates interested in any of the above positions should have skills in
any of the following disciplines:- Engineering, Analytical Chemistry,
Physics, Mathematics or Statistics.  They should be able to demonstrate
good communication skills and be willing to work for periods at company
sites across the UK and Europe.  The Research Associate positions will have
a salary range of £17,266 to £18,864, depending upon age, qualifications
and experience.  The PhD Studentships will have University Fees paid and a
maintenance stipend of £10,000 per year, reflecting the industrial
collaborative nature of the research programme.
