HSSS - SPRUCE Workshop on Complex Models and Methods for Environmental Problems HSSS is the highly structured stochastic systems initiative of the European Science Foundation. SPRUCE is a pioneering international organisation (Statistics for Public Resources, Utilities and Care of the Environment). HSSS runs annual conferences and workshops throughout Europe on stochastic modelling. SPRUCE holds international conferences (e.g. in Lisbon, Rothamsted, Merida and Enschede) on different aspects of environmental statistics. HSSS and SPRUCE are combining to hold a joint Workshop on Complex Models and Methods for Environmental Problems from 3-7 May 1999 in Willersley Castle, an historic site which was the home of the pioneering industrialist Sir Richard Arkwright, in Cromford in the Peak District National Park, Derbyshire, UK. The workshop will involve about forty individual workers in detailed presentation and discussion of problems relevant to its theme. The organisers are keen to hear from people who would be interested in participating. It is their intention to bring together both (a) statisticians currently working in environmental statistics who are interested in complicated or complex models and (b) statisticians experienced in developing and applying highly structured stochastic systems who are interested in environmental issues. Specifically the emphases of the Workshop will be as follows. . The workshop will be concerned with the study of sophisticated stochastic approaches to difficult environmental problems. . Both models and methods will be included. . Current research and its likely developments will be emphasised (rather than concerned for broad based review). . It is intended that talks will lead to discussions with a concern for cross fertilisation from non-environmental areas and from non-complex-modelling applications. . The workshop will commence with tutorials which spell out the HSSS initiative and the basis of environmental statistics The workshop is being organised by an Organising Committee comprising CW Anderson and V Barnett (for SPRUCE), A O'Hagan and N Sheehan (for HSSS). If you are interested in participating in this workshop please let Vic Barnett or Tony O'Hagan know by 15 June 1998 with an indication of the topic you would wish to introduce and discuss. Places are limited and those selected to attend the Workshop will be notified by 31 August 1998. Participants will be accommodated free of charge (or subject to a small administrative charge) but will have to pay their own travel expenses.
