Don University of Limerick College of Informatics and Electronics HEA Programme for Research Scholarships As a result of substantial funding from the HEA Programme for Research in Third-Level Institutions, the College of Informatics and Electronics at the University of Limerick seeks applications from qualified students wishing to pursue research leading to a PhD degree in the following areas. A. MATHEMATICAL AND STATISTICAL MODELLING (3 scholarships) The research interests of the Mathematical and Statistical Modelling group cover a broad range of areas including fluid mechanics, geophysical fluid dynamics, industrial mathematics, non-linear mathematics, numerical analysis, reliability, optimisation, neural networks, mathematical education, Bayesian methods, spatial statistics, epidemiology, and survival analysis. The research projects of current PhD students include (a) numerical and asymptotic modelling of viscous flows in industrial thin films, (b) the modelling of large-scale ocean circulation, (c) the numerical solution of convection/diffusion equations, (d) the statistical analysis of epidemiological studies, (e) techniques for the solution of non-linearly constrained continuous optimisation problems, (f) optimal architectures for neural networks and (g) algorithms for optimal price setting in particular financial markets. CONTACT: Don Barry (+353-61-202328, [log in to unmask]) , or Stephen O'Brien (+353-61-202644, [log in to unmask]) B. MEDIA TECHNOLOGY (2 scholarships) The research of the Media Technology Group involves members of the departments of Computer Science and Information Systems, Mathematics and Statistics, Electronics and Computer Engineering and Material Sciences. Its research covers a wide range of issues including distributed control, the development of novel sensor materials and embedded control systems, real-time process management and interaction, human computer collaboration and machine learning. The research project wishes to recruit Ph.D. students to research new sensor technology and interactive performance systems architectures. Students investigating sensor development will be supervised across departments. The research is currently focussed on the LiteFoot project, a dance floor with embedded sensors that is used as an input device and controller in generating multi-media processes. Details of the LiteFoot project can be found at http://www.ul.ie/~pal/litefoot/. CONTACT: Niall Griffith (+353- 61-202785), or Mikael Fernstrom (+353-61-202606). C. COMPUTATIONAL INTELLIGENCE (1 scholarship) The Computational Intelligence Group is an interdisciplinary research group involving all three Departments of the College of Informatics and Electronics i.e. Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Science and Information Systems, Electronics and Computer Engineering. The interests of the Group include various aspects of machine learning and intelligence including artificial neural networks, genetic and other evolutionary algorithms, and fuzzy control. These topics bring a wide range of expertise from Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science and Electronic Engineering to bear on two main research areas. One of these is the problem of designing algorithms for training artificial neural networks. The other important research activity deals with producing intelligent behaviour in mobile robots, such as navigation in dynamic environments and learning of pursuit-evasion strategies. CONTACT: John Kinsella (+353-61-202148), or Malachy Eaton (+353-61- 202773) Subject to satisfactory progress, funding for successful applicants will be for 3 years and will include: payment of fees, a (tax free) stipend of ?6,000 per annum, travel costs to attend selected conferences and to visit collaborators in other institutions. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
