Advance notice of harassment workshops

Harassment : A series of workshops/roadshows

Introduction

1.	Harassment, including Bullying, is increasingly becoming
recognised as an important employment issue. It can cause serious
personal and professional damage to individuals and impact on their
contribution in the workplace. Institutions that fail to address issues
of harassment are at significant risk of litigation, with record awards
by Employment Tribunals currently standing at about £380,000.

2.	A significant proportion of harassment is due to lack of
awareness rather than to negative intention- and educative sharing of
good practice and an encouragement of acceptable behaviour will usually
be more effective than punitive measures in addressing this issue in our
sector.

3.	Recognising this, a Commission on University Career Opportunity
(CUCO) working party has drawn up "Guidelines on harassment for
universities and colleges in higher education", which will be issued
early in 1999. In order to support implementation of these guidelines,
CUCO will run a series of two-day training events nation-wide,
comprising:-

Day One - Harassment - The Strategy
Training for managers and other strategists:-

Participants on this day will:-
*	Develop an understanding of harassment
*	Work on formulating a strategy to combat harassment in their own
institutions
*	Clarify their personal role in harassment situations
*	Refresh relevant interpersonal skills
*	Practise dealing with harassment through case studies.

Day Two - Harassment - The Implementation
Training for equal opportunities professionals:-

	Participants on this day will:-
*	Develop an understanding of harassment
*	Work on identifying mechanisms to implement institutional
strategies to combat harassment (for example, setting up a panel of
Harassment Advisors and raising the awareness of their community)
*	Clarify their personal role in harassment situations
*	Use group work on case studies to embed knowledge and share good
practice.

The events will run as follows:-

	23 and 24 March 1999 - London
	15 and 16 April 1999 - Edinburgh
	29 and 30 April 1999 - York
	13 and 14 May 1999 - Birmingham
	26 and 27 May 1999 - Bristol
	29 and 30 June 1999 - Southampton

4.	The trainer for both days will be Marie Hull, who has worked for
some years as a Personnel professional at the University of Plymouth, is
a past chair of the HE EO Network, and has many years' strategic and
operational experience of equal opportunities issues.

Cost and booking information

5.	The charge will be £60 per person per day, to include lunch,
