Talking Horse

(---The poet who reads his/her work aloud
risks comparison to a talking horse.)

Come round tonight,
the talking horse read poetry at the local pub,
recite with sweet neighing tones
and lucid prose style
trumpet down his long-nose
eternal verities that only a horse knows.

Firm he stand beneath forefeet and hind feet
tail swishing to the meter
as he munches oats from his feeder.

Pleasure to hear his voice quarrel
the droll charmed inflection compel
and cast at full gallop
along the meadow of his words,
and upon the ear cast a spell.

Please allow me to mention,
the talking horse remarkable
talent for poetic invention.

How he expel all manner of convention.
He does not stand on formality,
whinnies at the outmoded apparatus
of long-standing poetic tradition.

The species of talking horse,
long head bony given to poetic musing,
prevalent in pubs and cafes
spotted roan, sheltie, quarter horse, cow pony ---
the horse read aloud, neighing,
snort, bare high-crowned teeth
and make hay of their wordplaying.

Though a majority of horses write in obscurity
the talking horses has increased.
One sees the equine beast in bookstores,
signing their books of verse.

Talking horses are not as rare as they used to be.
