The final, much delayed, smelt of the 1998 experimental iron-
making season will take place at the Museum of Welsh Life, St 
Fagans, Cardiff on October 31st. This day also has the St Fagans 
Halloween celebrations taking place in the evening (6-9). It is 
envisaged that the smelt will start early in the morning and finish 
shortly before the torchlight procession from the Celtic Village to 
the burning of the Wicker Man!

For this last smelt of the season we will using a siderite ore from 
the S Wales coalfield rather than the goethite/haematite ores used 
during the previous experiments and the height of the bloomery 
furnace has also been increased slightly - so we are looking 
forward to an interesting day.
