In reply to the message from David Cunningham, I have been speaking to a few Bank Student Advisers over the last couple of days. You may be interest to note: Nat West and Barclays are offering packages to students whcih include cash incentives, mobile phones or pagers for opening a student account. The banks need the LEA letter only as proof of being a student. Potential students are encouraged to visit their local branches where the account can be set up in advance so that cheque books, cards etc can be received before arrival at the University. If students have not received their LEA letter then the incentive gifts will be withheld but the account can be operated. Barclays will allow an overdraft to stlg1200, Nat West stlg1000, but both banks are aware that there may be a requirement for a higher overdraft to bridge the gap between paying for tuition fees and residencies and receiving the Student Loan. Both banks have said this will not be a problem - students need to contact their branch to warn them if this is applicable. Lloyds have not yet released their details and I have not spoken to Midland yet, but I expect the same to apply. The problem re direct debits should therefore not be a problem to the organised student All the best Jayne King Financail Controller University College of Ripon and York St John %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
