                  INNOCENT III: URBS ET ORBIS

An international colloquium - supported by La Societa Romana di Storia
Patria and La Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Il Pontificio Comitato di
Scienze Storiche, L'Istituto Storico Italiano per il Medioevo, il Centro
di Studi sulla Storia della Cristianizz azione della LUMSA, La Commission
Internationale d'Histoire Ecclesiastique Comparee and the various National
Academies and Schools of Rome - is being jointly organised by La Societa
Romana di Storia Patria (Urbs) and a committee of scholars working in the
field (Orbis).

URBS
- Themes organised by the SRSP will focus specifically on the City of Rome
and the Patrimony:

Tommaso di Carpegna Falconieri, Julian Gardner, Ludovico Gatto, Etienne
Hubert, Jean-Claude Maire Vigueur, Werner Maleczek, Agostino Paravicini
Bagliani, Angiola Maria Romanini, Ant onio Sennis, Marco Vendittelli.

Themes will be:
The Patrimonium Petri, the Curia, Innocent's family, the Roman Comune,
local politics and Rome-based arts.


ORBIS
- Innocent's wider concerns throughout Christendom:
Speakers to include:
Maria Pia Alberzoni, Alfred J. Andrea, John W. Baldwin, Brenda Bolton,
Leonard Boyle, Ovidio Capitani, Christoph Egger, Antonio Garcia y
Garcia, John C. Moore, Peter Landau, Valentino Pace, Kenneth Pennington,

Themes to include:
Intellectual developments c. 1200; Education & Theology; Historiography;
Prosopography; Canon Law & Political Ideas; Marriage, family & sexuality;
Popular Religion & Liturgy; Heretics & Minorities; Crusades and other
faiths; Regional Differences & Politic s; Art History; Empowerment by the
Spirit.

The program will include an excursion to Innocent's home territory of
Segni, Anagni and Gavignano.



              A CALL FOR SUPPLEMENTARY PAPERS


Supplementary papers which fall within the themes of the Colloquium,
especially for the Orbis-part, are warmly welcomed from both established
and younger scholars. Supplementary papers should NOT exceed 20 minutes in
length. The title of the Supplementary paper together with a brief
synopsis should be supplied to one of the organizers

This is to enable a timetable for the delivery of papers to be drawn up
and an appropriate person invited to chair the session. Participants
should be prepared to deliver their papers at any of the Supplementary
paper sessions during the Colloquium in the afternoon.

Supplementary papers will be considered for publication. They should not
exceed 5000 words in length, including footnotes. [Please note that it is
not possible to deliver papers of this length in 20 minutes]. TWO copies
of the typescript must be left with the Session Chairman at the
Colloquium.

A colloquium fee of 120,000 lire will be charged. While the organisers are
not in a position to make any firm statement, it is hoped that some
special arrangements can be made for students and the unwaged.
