There is an essay by a historian (don't have my copy to hand so can't recall
his name off hand) on "the flying perizoneum" in the Princeton Index of
Christian Art's volume of papers, _Iconography at the Crossroads_, published
by Princeton University Press two or three years ago.  It was a somewhat
flamboyant paper, but might have some additional information for you.
