Artistic representations other than sculpture go for the rays-of-light
version--I'm thinking in particular of Dore's 19th-century engravings, and
there may be some paintings too.  "Horns" were the only way a sculptor would
have had to depict such a thing on Moses' head.

Indeed, there are paintings of the horned Moses  (see Ruth Mellinkoff's
book, as suggested by Elizabeth McLachlan).  One widely known example is
the image of "Moses Expouding the Law" (Deuteronomy) from the Bury Bible
(English, early 12th c).
