Gosh I hope this question isn't too silly... If we could ask late medieval people -- the kind of people I have in mind here are city or town dwellers with varying levels of education and wealth, even some lower levels of the clergy but *not* professional theologians -- to give a one sentence, in-a-nutshell kind of answer to the question "Why did God send Christ to earth?", how would they answer?
