Thank you to everyone who responded about monks and pastoral work. My work involves an examination of the vernacular texts in manuscripts up to c. 1175 which were copied from pre-Conquest Old English exemplars. The actual purpose behind the texts' adaptation for these later manuscripts remains very unclear, and although many of the references given in the last few days are useful in determining the general role of monks in this period, there remains much to be on the specifics, I suspect.
