Many thanks for your suggestion of 'rustic' for 'cafone'. I think it may be too learned a word to be part of the vocabulary of English 'labourers', (yet another word, but plainer), or 'peasants'. There is of course the question of how far one goes in translation with turning Italian, but universalised, 'cafoni' into English, American, Australian etc.'peasants' - who for whatever historical reasons do not actually exist. This is why I think Erich Mosbacher was right to leave the word 'cafone' in place in his recent translation - it just begs all these interesting questions!
