The Liber divisionis was a register of lay residents of Avignon who were not native citizens, dividing them between cortesani, who were subject to the jurisdiction of the marshall of the Curia, and cives, subject to the Temporal Court of Avignon. The register was recorded in the various parishes of Avignon in the autumn of 1371. Denifle got the date wrong, and so did Guillemain, unfortunately, because the list reflects the floating population of the city at a particular moment. Neither Denifle nor Guillemain transcribed the list. What information was wanted by the original inquirer about persons of Avignon?
