CALL FOR PAPERS: LEEDS 13-16 JULY 1998

FEMALE SPIRITUALITY

Papers are sought for inclusion in about eleven or twelve sessions
devoted to the literature and social context of female spirituality,
as interpreted both by women and men.

At least three sessions will be devoted to the following theme:

HILDEGARD OF BINGEN AND THE VOICES OF RELIGIOUS WOMEN IN THE TWELFTH
CENTURY

1998 marks the 900th anniversary of the birth of Hildegard of Bingen.
Increasingly acknowledged by scholarly and popular audiences for her
intellectual and artistic achievements, Hildegard, however, was
representative of the vital spiritual culture of religious women in the
twelfth century. As a Benedictine, Hildegard belonged to an established and
enduring monastic tradition. She lived her life against the backdrop of the
growth in diverse expressions of the religious life for women, which
provides the collective context for understanding her distinctive
spirituality and thought.

The theme of these sessions is intended to resituate Hildegard within her
broader social and religious milieu. Hers was but one of a multiplicity of
women's voices in the twelfth century. Papers will focus on varying
expressions of female religious life, including, but not limited to, musical
expression, liturgical development, architectural space and the
interconnections between spiritual, social and economic networks.

A selection of these papers will be edited by Dr. Constant Mews and Julie
Hotchin for publication in a special issue of the Journal of Religious
History, commemorating this anniversary, to appear in 1999.

Abstracts of papers (up to 400 words), relating either to Female
Spirituality in general, or to theme of Hildegard and Bingen and
Voices of Religious Women in the Twelfth Century, in particular,
should be sent by 1 August 1997 to:
