>Applications are invited for the above post on an ESRC Health Variations
>Initiative project to work with Dr Elspeth Graham, School of Geography, and
>Dr Malcolm MacLeod and Professor Marie Johnston, School of Psychology. The
>appointment of a research assistant in health/social psychology will be
>made at the same time as this appointment. The project is concerned with
>examining the relationship between social deprivation and recovery from
>myocardial infarction. Of particular interest will be the ways in which
>social comparison processes influence health outcomes.

>Applicants for the post should ideally be graduates with relevant research
>interests in social/medical geography and experience in the use of
>GIS/Census Mapping software (ArcView, MapInfo, SuperMap). Preference will
>be given to candidates who have completed a Ph.D. in Geography or a related
>discipline although candidates who have completed or are near to completing
>a Masters degree in GIS are also encouraged to apply. The appointee will be
>involved in all aspects of the project but will have special responsibility
>for investigating and mapping a range of indices of social deprivation to
>determine which is most closely related to health. A knowledge of the
>literature on deprivation and health would thus be an advantage.

>The appointee will be involved in both quantitative and qualitative work
>and should, therefore, have sound IT skills as well as an ability to
>undertake in-depth interviewing. A sensitivity to the personal
>circumstances of interviewees is important and previous experience of
>conducting interviews will also be an advantage. Most important of all is
>an enthusiasm for the topic and a willingness to work in an
>interdisciplinary team of Geographers and Psychologists.
