MIDRIB - JOB VACANCY An advertisement will shortly appear for a programmer to join the MIDRIB team. Sadly, Joel Crisp, our database programmer, is leaving the project at the end of March. His cutting edge skills, which have been further honed while solving our problems, will now be used in the commercial world in the research and development of new compiler technology. Working closely with a part-time member of the MIDRIB team the successful applicant will play a pivotal role in the continuation of the development and building of the MIDRIB system, database and tools. The post is based at St Georges Hospital Medical School, and the main duties are: Technical development and deployment of the MIDRIB database Coding, testing and development of the MIDRIB system and tools Actively developing the MIDRIB system model and making recommendations for the future of MIDRIB and its technical development. Maintainance of the projects UNIX workstations and server. Applicants for this position should have the following skills and experience. ESSENTIAL: Skills and experience in OOP techniques using C++ or JAVA Experience in application and code development in a UNIX environment A sound knowledge of HTML and administration of web servers, eg. Apache, CERN A good understanding of UNIX systems administration Experience with TCL/TK for applications development Experience with any kind of database management systems DESIRABLE: Experience with server-side JAVA development JAVA Just-In-Time compilers Experience with the JIGSAW webserver UNIX shell scripting including Perl An understanding of distributed indexing and replication models and their implementation eg X500, NDS, Sybase replication server Experience writing code for on-the-fly HTML generation USEFUL: ODBC and JDBC clients The WISH scripting environment Silicon Graphics INDY and Challenge hardware Sun NIS+ Some experience developing desktop applications for MS Windows MIDRIBs aim is to create, maintain and deliver a comprehensive collection of medical images in digital form, for use in teaching and research. The project will gather the best of existing collections from respected professional sources, and draw them together into a coherent resource. This will be available free to medical and healthcare faculties of UK Universities and teaching hospitals. It will be accessible from a distributed database via the Internet from a single WWW site.
