Would it be any help to them to use one of the sequencer packages which gives notation as well as note values - e.g. Cakewalk or Cubase? You can hear the notes as you enter them or move the cursor over them. I remember ages ago someone mentioning development of a scanning OCR package for music notation for blind composers !! I wonder what happened to that.... Good Luck!
